  1. 1538-1584. Italian Roman Catholic saint and
  2. cardinal. He was instrumental in bringing the
  3. Council of Trent (1562-3) to a successful
  4. conclusion, and in drawing up the catechism
  5. that contained its findings. Feast day 4 Nov.
  6. Born at Arona of a noble Italian family,
  7. Borromeo was created a cardinal and
  8. archbishop of Milan by his uncle Pope Pius IV
  9. in 1560. He lived the life of an ascetic, and
  10. in 1578 founded the community later called
  11. the Oblate Fathers of St Charles. He was
  12. canonized 1610.
